The Dark Knight Rises has released another intriguing piece of viral material, this time taking the form of a letter from Lucius Fox to erstwhile Wayne Enetrprises CEO Bruce Wayne.
The lengthy communication can be found on the Mountain Dew viral website , and it outlines Fox’s concern at Wayne’s longterm absence. There’s even a possible reference to a character from The Animated Series to set fanboy tongues wagging.
“I hope this letter finds you well,” begins Lucius. “Although I would have liked to have had this conversation with you personally, Alfred tells me I am better off writing as you are not receiving any visitors at the moment.”
So Bruce is back to his reclusive ways then. More intriguing is the reference Fox makes to the spending of the R&D division: “Over the past five quarters, our earnings have been on the downtrend. Meanwhile, our R&D spending has been on an astronomical uptrend. And as the black grows fainter around the entire company, I am being put into a position where I have to answer certain questions, particularly about your energy project.”
It seems as though Bruce is following in his father’s philanthropic footsteps, in an attempt to create clean energy for Gotham’s citizens. However, certain members of the Board are less than enthusiastic.
“I can see a couple [ of ] Board Members already manoeuvring to build influence around the table,” says Fox, “most notably John Daggett, who I feel is the last person we want to engage in a power struggle.”
Could this Daggett character be a reference to Roland Daggett of Daggett Industries, the company responsible for creating Clayface in The Animated Series ? If so, it’s probably just a nod to the fans, but a cool one nonetheless.
You can read the letter in its entirety over at the Mountain Dew site . The Dark Knight Rises opens in the UK on 20 July 2012.
