Rey may be the hero of Star Wars: The Force Awakens (opens in new tab), but her musical theme isn’t heroic, says longtime series composer John Williams. Instead, he claims her tune is meant to evoke feelings of empathy, and of setting out on a journey that is larger than oneself.
In a new behind-the-scenes featurette, Williams talks about returning to the franchise, and how he interpreted the saga’s new hero, Rey, and new villain, Kylo Ren. It’s a very cool – if a bit brief – look into the world of one of cinema’s most legendary composers. Check it out:
Listening to Williams speak, I feel like the thematic elements of the film come into clearer view. Rey’s theme is much like the classic “Twin Sunset” piece that underscored Luke’s journey, and as with that theme, I tend to think not of the person, but the journey they went on, when I hear it. Likewise, I can hear Kylo Ren’s ties to Darth Vader in his theme. Both characters are anchored to the past, but in wildly different ways.
Although Williams has not been confirmed for Star Wars: Episode VIII (opens in new tab), hearing his insight makes me excited for what’s next.
