Shane Black says his Predator film is a sequel rather than a reboot

Yesterday saw Fox confirm that it would be dusting off the Predator franchise for another go-around, but according to director Shane Black, the new film will be a sequel rather than a reboot.

“Why start over,” mused Black, when grilled by Collider on the nature of his plans, “when you’ve all this rich mythology left to mine?”

Black went on to say that while reboots leave him cold, he can “really get behind sequels”, noting that he was attracted to, “the idea of expanding and exploring the existing Predator mythology, rather than hitting the restart button.”

Given that the series has already been rebooted once before, it sounds like a sensible approach to the material, although just which parts of the mythology Black will choose to build upon remains to be seen.

He and co-writer Fred Dekker are currently penning some early ideas for the script, with a release date expected to be announced in due course.
