A sequel is already in the works for the Assassins Creed movie

It’s not even out yet but Hollywood clearly feels like its got a hit on its hidden blade-wielding hands with the Assassin’s Creed Movie. According to The Tracking Board (opens in new tab), production company New Regency is already working on a sequel. Michael Fassbender is apparently returning for Assassin’s Creed 2 alongside a significant chunk of the original production team.

The Tracking Board reports that Jean-Julien Baronnet will return on the Ubi Motion Pictures side, while Frank Marshall will be back on production duties alongside Fassbender and Conor McCaughan through DMC films. It’s surprising to see that a sequel has already been agreed so readily but it’s a really good sign. Shooting officially finished back in January so the studio must be happy with what its seen so far. Fassbender himself said he felt like they have “something special” (opens in new tab). It’s unclear whether Macbeth director Justin Kurzel will be returning to helm the hooded adventure.

If you’ve been asleep in a haycart, the Assassin’s Creed Movie takes place in the same universe as our known members of the Brotherhood but is a new story revolving around Spanish Assassin Aguilar, and his modern day descendant Callum Lynch. Lynch must jump into the Animus to learn the Assassin skills of his ancestor in order to take on the Templars in the modern day. Given that modern day Templar mega corporation Abstergo is led by none other than Jeremy Irons – listen to his ominous answerphone message here (opens in new tab) – and this is sounding better than any of the modern day sequences we’ve seen so far in the games.

Directed by Justin Kurzel and starring Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons and Brendan Gleeson, Assassin’s Creed hits US cinemas on December 21, 2016 and the UK on December 26, 2016.
