Warner Bros wants a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie with Daniel Radcliffe

Update: September 1, 2016

Despite the world of Harry Potter still very much alive in Hollywood thanks to the spin-off movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (opens in new tab), it seems fans are still desperate another Harry Potter movie starring Daniel Radcliffe.

Perhaps that’s what started the rumours that Warner Bros. was planning on turning the highly successful stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, into a trilogy movie. But before we could get too excited, Warner Bros. got in touch to confirm a few things: “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a stage play, with no plans for there to be a film.” Sad times.

Sorry super-fans. It looks like the rumour mill got out of hand (again), but never say never, right? At least we still have Fantastic Beasts to look forward to.

Directed by David Yates and starring Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton, Jon Voight, Gemma Chan, Ron Perlman, and Ezra Miller, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is scheduled to hit UK and US cinemas on November 18, 2016.

Original: August 31, 2016 – Warner Bros wants a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie with Daniel Radcliffe

Although Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling was quick to say that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – which currently only exists as a play and a best-selling book of the play’s script – would not be turned into a movie, it looks like that hasn’t stopped Warner Bros from pursuing the matter.

According to New York Daily News (opens in new tab)’ sources, the studio wants to turn the most recent instalment of the Harry Potter franchise into a trilogy of movies, and naturally they want Daniel Radcliffe to reprise his titular role.

As intriguing as it might be to see Radcliffe as a grown-up Harry Potter, I’d be surprised if he decided to return to the role. His career choices post-Potter have been very wide-ranging – between Swiss Army Man, Now You See Me 2, and Imperium, he’s starred in an eclectic bunch of movies in this year alone – and I’d be more excited to see him continue down that path as opposed to playing Harry once again. The actor recently stated that he wouldn’t necessarily rule out a return under the right circumstances though, so it’ll be interesting to see how this rumour develops.

Starring Jamie Parker, Paul Thornley, and Noma Dumezweni, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is now playing at the Palace Theatre in London.
