Funny Face review

One of Hollywood’s funniest, most stylish musicals, this breezy satire from 1957 thrives on the pairing of Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn.

The witty story sees fashion and existentialism (or, rather, America and Europe) do battle, with director Stanley Donen drenching everything in Givenchy-chic.

The Pygmalion plot (can Astaire turn ‘ugly duckling’ Hepburn into a model? Go on, guess) plays to the stars’ strengths, although ironically it’s Hepburn who delivers the film’s most memorable routine: a joyously silly, sublimely choreographed pastiche of contemporary dance.
