Training Day, the morally unsettling cop thriller from 2001, is getting the TV reboot you’ve always wanted. Unlike a majority of big-to-small screen adaptations, this not only has the blessing of original director Antoine Fuqua but his involvement as well. Warner Bros. Television is overseeing the show with Fuqua and Jerry Bruckheimer onboard to co-produce.
Fuqua, who brought the concept to Warner, is expected to direct the pilot episode, written by Gangster Squad scribe Will Beall. The story follows a similar path as the movie, in which Ethan Hawke starred as a rookie cop on a 24-hour “training day” with Denzel Washington, a veteran playing fast and loose with the law.
The show takes places 15 years after the events of the movie in present day Los Angeles – and it might switch the races of the two main characters. Either way, it’s unlikely that the series will depict the same quantity of graphic violence and general naughtiness as the film. Warner plans to land the show a home on one of the ‘Big 4’ broadcast networks.
