The Division movie nabs an Oscar-winning director

While Ubisoft’s The Division (opens in new tab) – the game – has struggled to maintain momentum post-launch, Ubisoft’s The Division – the movie – is continuing forward. Today, Ubisoft Motion Pictures announced that Stephen Gaghan will write and direct the upcoming film, which has Jessica Chastain (The Martian) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) attached to star.

Gaghan won an Academy Award for “Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published” in 2001 for his work on Traffic. He was also nominated for Best Writing, Original Screenplay in 2006 for Syriana, which he also directed. Of course, Gaghan also wrote Call of Duty: Ghosts (opens in new tab), which… wasn’t great. But still, when it comes to movies, his track record is pretty solid.

“The game has been an enormous success, in large part due to the visual landscape [Ubisoft] created, their vision of a mid-apocalyptic Manhattan,” Gaghan is quoted in a press release. “It’s immersive, wonderfully strange, and yet familiar, filled with possibilities. It’s also remarkable to be able to collaborate with Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal early in the process. We all feel the story Ubisoft created is more relevant than ever.”
