Universal is pushing forward on its Scarface remake as THR announced today that the movie has landed a new writer.
Straight Outta Compton scribe Jonathan Herman boarded the project and is tasked with channeling previous drafts by David Ayer (Fury) and Paul Attanasio (Donnie Brasco) into an entirely new rewrite.
Herman is rising in the ranks at the studio, as he’s also hard at work penning a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds.
The iconic character of Scarface rose to prominence in the 1983 Brian De Palma film starring Al Pacino as Cuban immigrant Tony Montana. He rises through the seedy criminal underbelly of ‘80s Miami and transforms into a drug kingpin who dishes out tasty one-liners. That version based itself on an even earlier movie of the same name from 1932.
This new take, directed by Pablo Larraín, is described as a “new and original” version set in present day Los Angeles.
